Upon opening the Historic Residence Madonna di Costantinopoli to the public, the convent has begun its new season, keeping the centuries old ancient atmosphere and traditions alive, when...
... In the period leading up to 1600 at about a mile from the present church, an image of the Virgin Mary, considered to be a miracle, was painted on a wall wedged between four oak-tree beams. This image is now situated on the high altar of the church. For many years, this image lay inside a simple road-side shrine built with the donations and charity of the devoted and served as a shelter for travellers.

...on 8 August 1690, after having obtained all the necessary authorization from the Apostolic See and Cardinal Pallavicino, the bishop of Spoleto, “some curial lords born in Cereto and who at that time were practising their profession in Rome, very heatedly became involved in these affairs (…) after that during a sung Mass, Father Pierfrancesco of Piepaterno laid down the first essential stone, the second was laid down by Father Atanasio of Norcia, the third by Father Giacomo of Borgo St. Sepolcro, the fourth by Father Silvestro of Bironico, the architect of the building, the fifth by the Lord Apostolic Mayor and one by one all those who had gone there together to see the service, gave their religious
and age-old very devoted
contribution. Thence, with the utmost care, not only the building
of the Convent but thank God also the Chorus,
the Sacristy and a new, bigger Church, so as to
increase its capacity for many people, went on...

According to the official historiography, the first building stone of the convent was laid down in 1690 by the Franciscan order, on the foundations of a previous church. To date, written evidence of what these places represented before this date has not yet been recovered, even though it appears evident from certain architectonic elements and certain structural details that it was a pre-existing place of worship and devotion that was already previously linked to the image of the Virgin of Constantinople. Some evidence dates the first church back to the high medieval period (9th-10th century). Originally it was easy to presume that a place of worship of the Etruscan era existed, probably due to the sources of water.

... in 1698, the Friars managed to obtain the bell of the church in ruins of Roccatervi, which was disputed by various communities
in the Cascia area and took it to the convent “but it isn't easy to
relate the miracles that took place in carrying the aforesaid Bell,
that weighed 1800 pounds, along very rough routes,
of mountains, hills, rocky valleys and roads that were
more than twenty miles long, due to the route taken via
Norcia and Ancarano since there was no other means of
reaching the destination... In the years thereafter, the
Convent became a training centre for monks in the
presence of the blessed... and of Father Petronio from
Bologna, named “the Saint”, a spiritual reference for the
whole country. In that period, there was a so-called
“students' residence” therein with nothing short of
25 students and 16 priests and there was even a
Provincial Chapter.

Hotel information

The convent emerges in the territory of the Cerreto di Spoleto municipality, on a hill which overlooks the valley, surrounded by a centuries old park and immersed in the nature of the most uncontaminated area of Umbria: the Valnerina, which is currently the Italian candidate of Unesco's human heritage.

The structure, which has been a private residence since 1880, has for centuries maintained its original fascination and atmosphere, due to the very long and precious restoration to which the current family who owns it has been devoted for three generations.

The elegance of the stones, the discrete fascination of the period furniture, taking care of each and every detail, the flavours and fragrances of a land bound to ancient rhythms, forms the backdrop of your stay, at only a short distance from the main historical and artistic centres of Umbria: Assisi, Spello, Trevi, Spoleto, Norcia, Todi, Montefalco and Perugia.

Room information

We will try to describe our rooms, one by one. What we cannot describe is the atmosphere, the silence and the magic of this place. You have to discover it, but in the meantime you can decide where to sleep...

(All rooms have bathrooms, even where it is not specifically stated in the description.)

Suite
Our most comfortable and luxurious suite: to be found in the body of the building's guest quarters, it has two large lounges, of which one has a splendid jacuzzi embedded in the floor in front of a big fireplace. The bedroom is a loft and directly overlooks the swimming pool. The suite has an entrance to the park and a private entrance to the swimming pool.

Junior Suite
This has always been the apartment where distinguished guests sleep. It gets its name from a bishop who was a guest of the family for years. He is now a cardinal but the name has remained. The large room overlooks the park and the swimming pool exactly where the sun rises. Some of the most beautiful light synopia frescos of the convent have remained on its walls and it has been furnished with very valuable and simple furniture. It has a small lounge with a fireplace and a large bathroom with a bath and a shower.

Deluxe
One of the most beautiful and particular rooms of the convent, it overlooks the park and is divided by two small arches. The bed has been placed in front of a small stone fireplace. It is the most romantic room in the convent.

Family Suite
The suite consists of the original room of the prior and the room of the sundial, a long lounge and a large bathroom. It sleeps four people in an absolutely comfortable and elegant manner.

Standard
A perfectly Franciscan style cell, very bright and with a splendid bathroom. It is one of the three “little” rooms of the convent but its charm has been untouched. It overlooks the cloister and the bell tower.

Televisions have obviously been banned from our rooms. However, there is always a library with a television and a wide selection of films at your disposal.

Our prices include breakfast, which is a buffet served in the old refectory or in the park and includes bread, farmstyle pizza and homemade cakes (often made in the wood-burning oven), using the herbs and spices of the park. The use of all common areas of the convent, park, swimming pool and tennis court is also included in the price.

Food & beverage

We are very happy to inform our clients that the restaurant service is finally on. The suggestive and unusual rooms will create the right atmosphere for romantic dinner, family, friends and business meeting.

Our cooking staff, under the control of the executive chef, will make you enjoy not only the typical dishes of Umbria but also the national and international cooking specialties. All matched with the best wine of our selected italian wine labels The restaurant is open at lunch and dinner time, in the inside room or in the garden, by moon and candle light. The reservation is required!
